Can Lemon Harm Your Hair When Put It to Make Hair Lighter?

  • Applying olive oil to hair and then exposing it to sun shouldn’t cause damage or burns. It’s likely something else applied to the hair caused the issues.
  • Regarding applying lemon to hair, lemon juice is acidic and has bleaching properties. When applied to hair and then exposed to sunlight, it can naturally lighten hair over time. However, lemon juice can be extremely drying so I recommend diluting as follows:
  1. Mix 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice with 1 large cup of distilled water.
  2. Add in 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. This will help impart shine as well.
  3. Shampoo hair as usual then rinse your hair with the mixture.
  4. Leave for up to an hour in the sun then rinse out with water followed by your deep conditioner.
  5. Repeat daily for up 3 - 4 weeks.
  • As I mentioned above, lemon juice can be extremely drying to the hair so give your hair breaks in-between applications and follow up with great deep conditioning treatments.
  • Additional benefits of this rinse is if you have oily scalp or dandruff, it can help reduce these issues significantly.
  • Bare in mind, this mix only works on lighter colored hair. It won’t work on darker hair shades.
