What is a merkin?

To put it bluntly, a merkin is a wig for the private parts, a sort of pubic wig.

We have been asked for one at Afrodite on rare occasions, but I repeat, very rare occasions!

They are sometimes still used in films, where the actor already has a Brazilian, but I think that they actually originated in the fifteenth century.

Women would shave their pubes for personal hygiene reasons and as a way of dealing with lice. They would then put on a merkin. Also they could be used to disguise signs of disease such as syphilis.
